History of My Hair

Since I started this blog in '05, well since I was born in '87, my hair has gone through many changes. Of course I was born natural and like most African American young girls, I received a perm at a young age. I never understood what perms really were or what they did until a few years ago. As embarrassing as it sounds, I actually thought my hair grew straight and new growth was just not as straight. My mother didn’t talk to me much about hair during my childhood. I remember my favorite style in elementary school was individual braids covered in multi-colored beads *nostalgia break* I liked to shake my head and hear the beads make noise. When I got to middle school, I started getting braids with extensions, I liked those too. I could go swimming without having to worry about my hair. In high school, my hair regimen consisted of several bottles of pink lotion and jars of hair grease. I only washed and conditioned my hair after I took it out of braids. I didn’t have a flat iron so whenever I washed it I thought I was doing something wrong because it would always result in a poufy unwanted look. I got a perm every month, wore it straight for as long as I could, then wear it in a pony tail until my next perm. Around my sophomore year my hair was the longest it’s been in my life so far, perhaps about 9.5 inches. Long as it was, I still fell into the weave trap twice for prom and graduation. Each time it took out a lot of hair because my stylist did not properly put the hair in and glued it instead of sewed it in. I was completely ignorant about weave; I just saw everyone else doing it.

When I started college in August 05, I guess my hair was about 7 inches. I struggled to find a new stylist for a while until I started getting perms regularly at a nearby salon. However before I found them, in December I went to this place close to campus. It was nice (and expensive) but they cut my hair to my ears because it “needed a trim”. The stylist educated me a little about hair. That was the first time in my life I couldn’t put my hair in a ponytail. It really sucked. I got a CHI flat iron and learned how to straighten myself and wash it every week. My regular place had a deal in which you pay a monthly fee and you get a perm once a month and they wash it for you every week. That was good for me since I was just beginning to learn how to take care of my hair anyway. With time, it grew back, even with the frequent trims I was getting. My first roommate was natural, but I never considered it until I started doing research for myself in late 2007. My hair was breaking off bad, and I couldn’t figure out why. I was too busy with school and my extra circular activities to wait in the salon all day for a perm, much less go every week for that wash. Soon I stopped going altogether. I can’t recall exactly when my last perm was but I went to another salon around March 2008 and the stylist wouldn’t give me a perm because my hair was so damaged or something like that because of the perms. I then got a consultation at a natural hair salon and decided to go natural. To transition, I wore individual braids for about a year starting May '08 to April '09. On August 20, '08, all of my relaxed hair was cut off right before I got some more braids. I enjoyed the ease of styling but took proper care of the braids. I did a LOT of research during that time to learn about natural hair and how to take care of it. When I took those braids out in Dec. my hair was about 4 inches long.

Today, I have 8 inches of natural hair. You can't tell though because it shrinks so much. My goal is to have 10 inches by the time I graduate in summer '10. This was my first semester wearing my natural hair , I wasn’t sure if I would have the time to properly take care of it and style it. I wear mostly in a puff; I can’t wait until the semester ends so I can have time to experiment with different styles during the break. I can't say I won't ever relax again, but I have educated myself about hair to understand the advantages, challenges, and proper care for being natural and relaxed.

Quotes of the Day

"What is love?"
"The total absence of fear," said the Master.
"What is it we fear?"

Champions aren't made in gyms.
Champions are made
From something they have deep inside them:
A desire, a dream, a vision.
They have to have last-minute stamina,
They have to be a little faster,
They have to have the skill and the will.
But the will must be stronger than the skill."

I don't get why...

Alumni of my school and other people keep telling me to stay in college as long as I can. I am so stressed out right now it seems like graduation is my only hope and source of motivation. I understand that the “real world” is a challenge and the economy is making it that much harder to find a job, but the costs (both financial and mental) of college are too much to bear sometimes.

My life now includes several graduate courses and my graduate assistanceship. I also have to have an executive position in one of the student run companies in my business school and I am on the executive board of my school’s chapter of the oldest and largest professional business fraternity in the United States, Alpha Kappa Psi. I literally have 30 hour days sometimes. On top of that I have bills to pay including rent, tuition, utilities, and my cell phone bill. I have been paying all these bills (mostly on my own) since I got to college in 2005.

Once I get a full-time job, that’s all I will have to worry about and focus on. The fixed income from it would also take away so much anxiety. I am always worrying if I will have enough money to last until I graduate. My school’s financial aid office is not that efficient either, a scholarship I received over the summer still has not been disbursed so my tuition has not been paid yet. If I do not receive it soon, I’m not sure what will happen.

I did have other scholarships from my school during my undergraduate years, but I still had to budget that money to get by. Now that I am a graduate student, my scholarships do not switch over, but I’ve had paid internships during the summers that help, but my expenses are year round, not just during the summer when I am working.

To be honest, I’m tired of feeling so poor. I know so many students younger than me with nicer wardrobes, cars, and can go on trips during spring break like cruises. It must be nice to have parents that can afford those things or have the will to, but I’m not as fortunate. I’ve never been anywhere for spring break distinctly for pleasure and I still wear my shoes that I got for prom during high school when I go out. I don’t want a lot; I’m just tired of struggling. I don’t have expensive tastes or even prefer brand labels; I’m perfectly happy shopping at store like Payless which would let me save so I can build wealth.

I also don’t want my life to revolve around my bills. That’s the reason I’m taking 17 graduate credit hours right now (with full time being only 12), the main reason for my stress. I’m trying to graduate before my lease ends in August 2010 so I won’t have to renew it and then probably have to break it when I do graduate and pay the associated costs.

Song of the day 9/15

Kid Cudi - 50 Ways to Make a Record
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0h4ddUwAQ5M

You sit and think about,
How you can hit the scene.
Take one look inside,
Your mirror clear to see.
You need to find yourself,
As honest as can be...
There must be 50 ways to make a record.

Now Don't get wrapped into,
The hype and what they think.
This s*** ain't rocket science,
And the scene changes with beats.
And now you ask yourself,
How you want to be seen...
There must be 50 ways to make a record.

He's up inside the clubs,
They like to lean and rock. Oh,
Stands around and looks intrigued by what he saw.
Now he asks me,
How he can make hit songs to reach the top...
There must be 50 ways to make a record.
50 ways to make a record.

You got talent and,
Your soul cannot be bought.
He looked and smiled at me,
And told me "Thanks a lot."
See I could use your help...
And would you please explain about the 50 ways...

It's kind of easy,
If you have a open mind.
This game is more than,
Spending money and f***** dimes.
It's all within your words,
Some s*** that outlives time.
There must be 50 ways to make a record.
50 ways to make a record...

I CANNOT get this song out of my head lol. I'm seeing more to it than just making an album, but about life in general. As I am getting closer to graduating as each day passes, it seems like there are 50 paths I can take. The path I choose will shape my life, as an album shapes how the public sees an artist through their music. I hope Kid Cudi and I can get it together, soon.
